Newgate is one of the world’s best-known and most loved clock brands. Established in the heart of Britain in 1990, Newgate is renowned for producing high-quality vintage, industrial, retro and mid-century clocks.
Newgate is founded and run by Shrewsbury-based Jim and Chloe Read, and all Newgate clocks are an extension of Jim and Chloe’s own experiences and personal design tastes. But what inspires the designs of these iconic clocks which have become such a mainstay of interior design, in Britain and worldwide? We spoke to creative director and chief designer, Jim Read, about what inspires him when it comes to designing some of the world’s best-loved clocks…
Clocks with vintage design at their core
When Jim and Chloe initially set up business together, they started out by scouring antique and flea markets for decorative picture frames to frame and sell Jim’s paintings. Jim and Chloe then purchased a picture framing machine, and by chance they hit upon the idea of incorporating clock movements into the artworks to make quirky timepieces. This was their first step towards designing and creating clocks.
Both Jim and Chloe’s parents were antique dealers, so it was likely that there would be a strong antique/vintage influence to whatever Jim and Chloe set out to do. This certainly turned out to be the case - that influence still resonates throughout Newgate’s clock designs to this day.
When asked about the inspiration behind Newgate clock designs, Jim said “I already have a vast knowledge of vintage, retro and antique clocks, and we have a vast collection of vintage clocks. I also have every book and catalogue on vintage and retro clocks that exists!” This passion for vintage clock design shines through in Newgate’s iconic designs, whether it’s a traditional railway station clock with roman numerals, a mid-Century station clock inspired by Jim and Chloe’s travels across Europe, an angular retro desk clock, or a classic hammer-on-bell alarm clock.
Given Jim’s fascination with the past, it’s perhaps not surprising that he has also cited other vintage and retro influences when it comes to creating Newgate’s clock designs. One of Jim’s most treasured possessions in an antique barograph, owned by his grandfather who was a radio scientist with the MI5. The barograph now sits on the desk in Jim’s office as a constant source of inspiration, alongside a vintage die cast racing car which previously belonged to Jim’s father. And when Jim is designing, he always has music on which, he says, is “generally jazz as I think it’s the best background noise to be creative to.”
Retro clocks for modern homes
Whilst Jim’s clock designs may pay homage to the past, Newgate clocks are the ideal time pieces for modern homes, lending style, gravitas, and charm to any interior.
Jim explains that he still explores the world’s coolest antiques markets for inspiration- be that any inspirational object, not just clocks. Jim said “I’m always looking for new ideas. And always creating new looks.”
