Burke Decor was founded in 2007 by Erin E. Burke after working on a commercial development in post-Katrina New Orleans. Finding it difficult to source the decor, building materials, plumbing and lighting fixtures for the project locally, she turned to the internet where it became clear there was an opening for a home decor business that could provide quality, high style design to people outside of major metropolitan areas. Compelled by design, function and form, Burke Decor’s brand is guided by a group of designers and resourceful style-makers inspired by artfulness and great design. We believe every home, environment and travel experience can and should be beautiful.
In our latest Retail Spotlight series, we caught up with Burke Decor, an online boutique featuring home decor, furnishings, gifts and home accents by designers from around the world.
Please could you tell us a little bit about Burke Decor?
Burke Decor is an online home decor and lifestyle shopping destination. We started out in 2007 as an online only retailer and eventually opened our first brick and mortar location in 2012. We strive to provide a broad selection of quality home goods from big name brands as well as local makers, international designers and bring previously to the trade only designs to the retail customer.
What inspired the beginning of Burke Decor?
What’s been one of the most exciting moments since the store opened?
Opening our first brick-and-mortar location in Ohio in 2012 was a big milestone and exciting step for us that has led to more locations in Los Angeles and Ohio, including an outlet, and café concepts, and we are just starting a new project that will result in a full showroom in Glendale, CA opening 2023.
What kind of products do you sell?
Everything! From toothbrushes to chandeliers, wallpaper to slippers - if it lives in your home, we have it. We work really hard to ensure we cover every category while all selecting pieces across the style spectrum.
How would you describe the style of your store?
We love the art of the mix! We try to bring the best of decor and furnishings in every type and style to our offering. Because our customers are so unique, we think their homes should reflect their personal style and keeping our offering broad helps us be a one stop shopping destination for our curatorial minded and discerning clients.
What’s your favourite Newgate product?
The Putney Clock is a classic. I love the scale and modern yet minimal face. It’s a strong look that works in almost every interior.
Who or what are you influenced by?
Art and architecture, period interiors and production design. I love looking at interiors in films because there is license to go a little bit bigger and broader than in real life and those grand gestures are inspiring for aspirational interiors.
What advice would you give to anyone starting a new venture?
Think long term and don’t get discouraged by slow starts. If an idea doesn’t work, it just gives you more knowledge to bring to the next project. Most importantly, partner and work with people you like, respect and trust.
Are there any fashion/ interior trends you’re predicting or excited for in 2022?
We’re loving the infusion of vintage Memphis Milano designs, the resurgence of colourful interiors and bold wallpapers, and especially sculpted and unique shapes furniture.
