The Dawn of Time(keeping)
In a twist of fate and inspired rebellion, Jim and Chloe Read, aged just 17 and 20, diverged from their expected paths. Jim, shown the door by art college, and Chloe, turning her back on university, found a shared dream. Selling Jim's cherished Mini Moke, they laid the cornerstone of what was initially The Clockwork Company. Little did they know, they were setting the hands of destiny in motion.
A Stellar Debut
The Clockwork Company makes its mark at the Top Drawer trade show in Alexandra Palace, London. Captivating the prestigious Harrods among their first clients, they began their venture from a humble spare room, proving that great oaks from acorns grow.
A New Name, A New Era
As their dreams expanded, so did their identity. The Clockwork Company was reborn as Newgate Clocks, a nod to the historic New Gate of Oswestry, and symbolising their entrance into the world of timeless design. That same year, a leap across the pond to a New York trade show opened the floodgates to a thriving export market in the USA.
The Expansion Chronicles
Moving to a small industrial space in Oswestry, Newgate began manufacturing at a heartier pace. Their presence now graced trade shows far and wide, from London to New York, making waves with every tick.
The Viral Sensation
The 'Rusty Cogger' clock, designed by Jim, didn't just tell time; it told a story, becoming an instant classic and inspiring countless others.
Scaling New Heights
With success ticking louder, Newgate moved to larger premises. A quest for affordability and quality led Jim to China, marking a pivotal shift in their manufacturing journey.
The Fusion Era
The introduction of 'Jones Clocks' infused fresh energy into their company, while the last of their UK-manufactured clocks marked the end of an era.
A Nostalgic Move
In a poetic expansion, Newgate transformed an old Laura Ashley sewing factory into their new sanctuary of creativity and innovation.
The Digital Revolution
Embracing the future, Newgate unveiled its first digital LED and LCD clocks, a nod to the ever-evolving landscape of timekeeping.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
The pandemic tested their mettle, but Newgate adapted and evolved, birthing the eyewear brand London Mole in a display of relentless creativity.
The Golden Age
Newgate's journey from strength to strength continues, with the latest year being their most successful yet. With eyes set on the future, they promise new designs, unmatched styles, and boundless innovation.
