Time Spent with @Jigsaw
Newgate has a chat with DJ Jimmy Geddes Sword Wallace
26-Year-old Jimmy Geddes Sword Wallace: House / Techno DJ
How did you come up with your stage name?
It’s my initials and my mum is into jigsaw puzzles.
How did it all start?
I had never really been into music until I was 18 and then whilst at uni my mate played me this one album (JUSTICE by Cross) and then ever since that point I have been completely obsessed. I spend my days immersed in music, either listening to it or making it. I enjoy trying to “convey my feelings of that day into musical form” it’s my passion. I enjoy trying to find or create music that no one has heard before, trying to find or create something new. That’s why I started DJ-ing.
How does it happen? How do you get inspired?
It comes in different ways to be honest, it might sound stupid but some of the best music that I make is by accident. You have an idea of what you’re looking for in your head but then you stumble upon something completely unexpected and then that can be the basis for a song. All you need is that one spark – something that sets it all off, whether it be a sample from a dusty old record, one cord or an acapella piece.
Sometimes I just create complete chaos in the Den (studio), refine it all back and then produce the gold dust, the stuff that I am proud of. My music is based on repetition; I spend my days whittling away listening to or searching for music – I can go to my old record collection to find something different but 99% of the time it’s all in the mind and ears.
If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?
I wouldn’t even like to think about it, but I would be involved in some aspect of music, whether it be a sound engineer or choosing music for film.
